I’ve kept my experiments on Substack a secret in 2025, so here’s an attempt to shout about my side project in 2026…

Since mid-2025 I’ve been writing Flickers from the Archives, my Substack publication about lesser-known women from history.

Posting my own work here feels very vulnerable. In my day job as Digital Producer at Historic Royal Palaces, I have the privilege of hiding behind my screen, keeping our editorial process in check alongside a fantastic team who support each other. But Substack is all me, and (disclaimer) all my own opinions.

The point of all this has changed along the way. It’s still about those women. But I’m equally concerned about the very 21st-century task of supporting books by real authors (humans), bought from small businesses. It’s a task that’s very close to my heart.

Also, as anyone who’s shared an office with me will know, I love talking about books…

So I’ve been working on ways to recommend work from others in my writing via Bookshop.org (also a great way to support authors and small businesses). My latest post about the Suffragettes is one way of satisfying all these urges.

The publication is still a work in progress, but I’d love for you to join me. You can find the link to this post in the comments, and it’s free to subscribe or view the archive.

More experiments to come in 2026.

Thanks so much for reading ❤
